Snow-Made Ice Cream

By Bethany Booth
Gather the family and slip on the snow boots! You will need to scoop up plenty of fresh fallen snow for this frosty winter treat. Snow ice cream can be made in an endless variety of flavors and is as fun to prepare with the kids as it is to eat!

Here are a few helpful tips before you get started:

1) Chill bowl, utensils, and other ingredients before making snow ice cream so that it doesn’t melt too quickly.
2) Wear gloves while preparing to keep your hands warm!
3) Use fresh snow or shaved ice. Never use snow gathered from a snow machine. The water used in snow machines is usually taken straight from a river or pond and sometimes biodegradable compounds are added to produce the desired quality of snow; non-toxic but not great for eating!
4) Individualize! Let everyone choose his/her own toppings and mix-ins such as: sprinkles, Oreos, gummy bears, chocolate or caramel sauce, fresh fruit... etc!

If you can’t gather up enough “fresh” snow you can use shaved ice for any of the above recipes or if you want to make use of the snow you have but all you can find is the gritty black snow packed up along the curb, try this:

Snow Frozen Ice Cream

1 Gallon size Freezer bag half filled with snow

add 6 Tablespoons of salt (the salt lowers the freezing point of the ice, allowing the cream to freeze).

In a quart-size freezer bag, mix:
1/2 Cup half and half or cream
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Squeeze excess air out of quart-sized bag and seal it.

Place the quart-sized bag inside of the gallon-sized bag.

Squish the bag until the ice cream inside the quart bag is frozen (wear gloves to protect your hands from the cold).

Remove the quart bag, open it, and enjoy your snow-made ice cream!
