These French Dip Sliders Could Not Be Easier
One of my husband’s very favorite meals of all time are French Dip sandwiches with au jus. It’s something that we do not have often enough, partly because I just haven’t quite nailed down the right recipe for them. For whatever reason, when I’ve tried making roast beef to turn into French dips, the meat has turned out too tough and my au jus sauce has never been just right!
Leave it to Natasha at Natasha’s Kitchen to bring me a new smash hit recipe for our family that everyone, most especially my husband adores. Say hello to the easiest way to make French dips for a crowd: French dip sliders. Absolutely delicious and super easy to put together. This is a recipe that uses all store-bought ingredients to get them on the table in under 30 minutes from start to finish, so today’s recipe isn’t for slow cooked au jus and slow roasted beef. You use high-quality roast beef, loaded with caramelized onions and provolone or mozzarella cheese, a bit of mayo, all stacked on a sheet of buttered Hawaiian sweet rolls. You slice the whole sheet of rolls in half and layer all your ingredients on top and bake in the oven until the cheese is melted and the meat is hot. You add a bunch of melted butter to the tops of the rolls and add sesame seeds, if desired. Lastly, you make up a batch of store-bought au jus mix. I really like the Johnny’s brand Au Jus mix--just remember those packets can make really salty Au Jus sauce so add the mix a little at a time until you get to the flavor you want. You don’t necessarily want the whole package.
Natasha has another recipe for Pastrami French Dip sandwiches that is more traditional with the French baguette and made-from-scratch au jus. But in that recipe she makes sauteed mushrooms to add on top so I added that step to these sliders because my husband adores mushrooms. To keep it kid-friendly, I only added it to one half of it to keep everyone happy.
I think the pastrami and mushrooms both sound like such great ideas. I am definitely going to try pastrami the next time I make it because that sounds heavenly! Feel free to add any additions that you would want on your “French dip” sandwich to make it your own, like sauteed mushrooms and onions. Next time I think I will add a little horseradish sauce to the mayo to give it just a little kick. Isn’t the combination of roast beef with horseradish so wonderful?
Well, if you are a fan of French Dip sandwiches I hope you’ll give this easy recipe a try. Have you made any other types of Sliders with Hawaiian sweet rolls? Please share in the comments below.

2 tablespoons butter
1 large or 2 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
1/4 teaspoon sugar
1 ounce au jus mixes, made according to package instructions
3 cups water, to make the sauces, or to taste
16 Hawaiian sweet rolls
1/4 cup mayonnaise, thinly sliced
1 pound deli pastrami or roast beef, thinly sliced
9 slices mild provolone cheese, not aged
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted, plus more to grease baking sheet
1 tablespoon sesame seeds
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350?F. Butter a rimmed baking sheet.
Place a large skillet over medium/high heat with 1 Tbsp olive oil and 2 Tbsp butter. Add sliced onion and Sauté over medium heat for 5 minutes until softened, stirring occasionally. Sprinkle with 1/4 tsp sugar and sautee uncovered 5 minutes until caramelized and golden, stirring often. Transfer to a plate.
In the same pan, add 2 1/2 cups water and scrape the pan to deglaze. Add the au jus seasoning (adding to taste*) then bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer according to package instructions. Add more water to taste if it’s too salty.
Cut buns in half. Place the bottom half of dinner rolls on a buttered baking sheet and spread 1/4 cup mayo. Layer folded slices of beef evenly over the rolls. Spread caramelized onions over your sliders. Cover the beef with sliced provolone.
Place the top of buns over and brush the tops with 2 Tbsp melted butter then immediately sprinkle tops with sesame seeds. Bake uncovered at 350?F for 12-15 minutes, or until cheese is melted and tops are golden brown.
Cut through the buns with a serrated knife to separate into individual sliders. Serve with warm au jus dip.
