Get Personal for Father's Day
by Patty Liston
Father’s Day was first suggested as a national holiday in 1909. However, it wasn’t until President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the presidential proclamation in 1966 that Father’s Day became official.
Now, prior to the 3rd Sunday of June, we scratch our heads trying to figure out what to get “dear ol’ dad”. Not another tie! No more cologne! How about home made? Chances are you won’t even have to go to the store to put the following fun idea together. Thanks to Cheri Sicard for sharing.
Get some kind of container that best suits your particular Dad’s personality. Some ideas are:
A metal lunch box
An insulated lunch bag
A small plastic cooler chest
A tool or tackle box
A picnic basket
A watering can
An ice bucket
Any variety of cooking pots, pans or bowls
Once you have the container, just fill it with some of dad’s favorite things. Does he like to bar-b-que? How about sauces, rubs, or new tongs? Is he into gardening? What about gloves, pots of his favorite flowers, a gift card to a nursery.
You can be as creative as you would like. My husband is wild and crazy, so I have a take-home hospital bed pan that I am going to fill. I’ll rent his favorite comedy movie, and add gourmet pop corn, candy, Groucho glasses and a book by Bill Cosby. What can I say? I’m married to a frustrated stand-up comic.
The point is, get personal. If you have children at home, trust me, they will love to put in their ideas of dad as well. Have fun, and enjoy “His” day.
