Are Iron and Aluminum Harmful?
Interesting article on dutch ovens, which I absolutely love.... BUT, we went to a cooking demo at a local fair and the speaker said to throw all of your cast iron and aluminum cookware away and buy the new West Bend products that are stainless steel.
He said both the iron and aluminum we get from foods cooked in these metals are extremely harmful to our health and should stop immediately. What is your take on this. Thank you very much....
Patricia
Hi Patricia,
I cannot find any information regarding the excessive leaching out of iron or aluminum from a Dutch oven. From what I've learned, the reason cooking in an iron pot is so beneficial is because some of the iron gets into the food we eat. With all the iron supplements people take these days, I'd think a recommendation to cook in a Dutch oven would be promoted.
I cook frequently in a Dutch oven and feed my kids from it. We have had no ill effects whatsoever, as thousands more can attest to.
I did find an article on some "banned" cookware in Canada. The interesting line that stood out, in the final paragraphs, was to replace the banned cookware with a Dutch oven.
So, unless I'm just terribly naive, I say go ahead and use your ovens. With all the exposure to chemicals in our society (air, soil, water, homes, cars, etc.), I'll probably get ill anyway, and I'd at least like to enjoy a good meal from my Dutch oven in the process.
Hope this helps,
