Stinkin' Fruit Flies!
I've had a real problem with fruit flies this fall, and others around me have also. After searching the net I came up with 2 home made fixes and they both work. My fly population is severely depleted in 2 days
1: Mix 2 tbsp cider vinegar and one tbsp dish soap in a small dish. (Apparently some dish soaps don't work but mine did). I put three of these dishes around the house
because when you have a lot of flies they are all over the place and these dishes all collected flies
2: Put a few small pieces of banana in a container (I used a 1 cup canning jar). Cover tightly with plastic wrap and put an elastic band around the top, sealing
it completely. Poke several very small holes in wrap, just enough so the fly can work it's way in but not large enough so it can get back out. I used a pencil
to poke the holes and this worked well. You may have to experiment with hole size as you see what the flies do!
The recipe didn't state this, but I put the jar in the freezer at night to kill the live flies, then defrosted it the next day. They were dead but this didn't stop a
bunch more coming into the jar the next day. I threw the stuff out that night then reset it again, using the same wrap with the holes in it
Someone also mentioned that bananas should be washed when you bring them into the house. If there are any fly eggs, they will hatch shortly and you want
to avoid this
Thought somebody out there might be glad of this - Kathy Mahoney
Hi Kathy,
Thank you for the great tips!! You are right; fall definitely brings in the flies just before winter.
I am sure others would appreciate your tips too.
Thanks again for writing,
Barbara
