Recipes for Cancer

Hi,

I have been receiving the newsletter for years. I love it!

Now I find myself in a predicament. I have cancer and I have been advised to stop eating foods that turn to sugar because that is what cancer thrives on. I cannot find very many interesting recipes because of the list of ingredients I need to not eat. Can you help? This is a list of foods that I am supposed to forgo:

Sugar, flour, corn, dairy, meat, rice, potatoes, fruit

I can have chicken breast skinless and boneless. I do not like fish of any kind so I basically stick with chicken and eggs for protein. Ezekiel Bread is the only bread. I would love some help on this.

I can have these items:

Sweet potatoes, eggs, vegetables fresh and steamed lightly, Ezekiel bread, olive oil, coconut oil, legumes

Any help will be very appreciated!

Hi Carrie,

You have quite the challenging diet on your hands. I think eating whole-grain foods would be very good for you. I hope that when the advice came to avoiding certain foods that it actually meant refined, processed foods. Whole-wheat flour, brown rice, and many other types of grains would be an excellent source of vitamins, fiber, minerals, protein, and other nutrients to keep you strong. If you can add these whole-grains to your diet, your meal options will really open up. I recommend the book by Lorna Sass called "Whole Grains for Busy People." I've also attached a link to cooking beans. It includes recipes and tips for inspiration. You can look for more help in DVO's Cook'n titles including: Living with Cancer, Vegetarian Cook'n, Cook'n India (includes many vegetable/bean recipes). You can download sample recipes from these titles and also browse included recipes at the following links.
