DIY Dry Shampoo!
I am the very lucky mother of 2 beautiful children. I have a 2 year old son and a 6 month old daughter, and boy do they keep me busy! They are such a blessing in my life—but let's be honest, there are some days I am lucky if I can get a shower in. And then there are those days that someone mentions the word shower and I have to decide if I'm going to laugh or cry.
But that all changed when I discovered the magic of dry shampoo. I love this stuff—it can turn a limp, flat, bad hair day into a glorious, voluminous one. And it's perfect for those days when a shower is just not going to happen. And due to my ever-thinning hair (can anyone else relate to the postpartum hair-loss blues?!) I even use it sometimes just when I want to add a little more volume to my hair—to give it a 'lift'.
The only downside was the fact that I have dark hair, and so spraying something so light in my hair made me look like a grey-haired stress case or a flour-covered, overgrown toddler unless I used it very sparingly, and let's face it—some days I needed a little more help than others. Not only that, but I hated that I had to spend money on another hair product, and I am all about saving money, not spending it.
So I was even more excited when I discovered a recipe for DIY dry shampoo—yup, that's right. I love DIY because it's cheap and usually healthier. Not only that, but I found a recipe that I could blend with my dark hair. And this recipe in particular caught my attention because it only used 3 ingredients—all of which I found in my kitchen!
Can I just say, this stuff is awesome. I have been using it for a few months now and I feel that it works just as well as the store-bought stuff—but it's even better because I save money and it blends with my hair nicely. It's also so handy because you can adjust the amount of cocoa you use to make it lighter or darker depending on the shade of your hair. The other great thing is you can keep it in a cute little glass jar—which is something I can never have enough of!
Once you've made your shampoo, you just use a make-up brush to gently brush it onto the roots of your hair. Make sure to shake off the excess powder on your brush before applying it to your hair, or you'll end up with some not-so-attractive brown splotches on your scalp. Then gently brush the shampoo through your hair and voila! Beautiful, thick hair!
In this recipe I included a version for light hair and for dark hair. You can also substitute the essential oil for any scent you prefer (or you could even 'spice' things up and use cinnamon!).
