In a saucepan, whisk together the wine and sugar and heat until the sugar dissolves.
In a large serving dish, place the bread slices and cover with the wine/sugar mixture. Place in the refrigerator for 20–25 minutes, turning the bread slices every 10–15 minutes.
In a large, heavy skillet, melt 1–2 tablespoons butter. Add bread slices in batches and, over medium heat, brown about 2–3 minutes on each side. (Add more butter as needed.) Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
