Heat oven to 350°. Grease a 9 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan.
In a medium bowl, combine flour, baking powder, ginger, cinnamon, allspice, salt, and baking soda set aside.
In a large mixer bowl at medium speed, beat sugar and shortening until creamy. Beat in eggs, then molasses and water. At low speed, beat in dry ingredients until moistened increase speed to medium and beat for 2 minutes. Pour into prepared baking pan.
Bake for 50 minutes until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Serve warm with whipped cream or applesauce.
