Packaging is important to maintain the freshness of the food as well as to make it attractive and easy to transport. If the recipe calls for storage in an airtight container, it will not do well in a paper box. Even transparent plastic wrap "breathes." Unless your gift is for immediate use, select a jar or tin with a tight lid, then seal it with a piece of tape for added protection. Lining with foil or a sturdy plastic bag can turn otherwise unsuitable containers into airtight ones.
Glass containers need to be thoroughly cleaned and sterilized. The dishwasher does a good job on wide-mouthed jars. Bottles may need to be soaked to remove food odors and brushed well inside. If possible, choose jars with a rubber strip inside the lid they seal the best. Bottles may require fresh, unused corks to avoid contamination from other flavors. You can purchase corks at hardware stores. Earthenware crocks need to be glazed inside.
When giving a food gift in a festive atmosphere, verbal instructions for use and storage are often forgotten. Include a card or tag explaining how to keep the gift fresh. You may also want to share the recipe.
