Adopt a Grandparent

This activity has a two-fold purpose, and is applicable for all ages, providing long term relationships and activities. Whenever we moved to a new town, we would seek out a widow (since we have girls), and adopt this person as a grandmother. Our kids loved to go visit and have tea parties with "grandma", take her shopping, out to lunch, or to doctor appointments. This is a mutually beneficial relationship, which hopefully has taught our children to respect and care for the elderly.
