Smoothie Additions
You mentioned brewers yeast and wheat germ in your newsletter on smoothies. I was wondering if there is a safe shelf life on either one if they have been kept in the fridge since being opened? Does anyone know how long they are good to keep or safe to eat or drink? Was also wondering if you could put bee pollen in the smoothies for an added energy punch-up.

Hi Sue,
I'm unable to find a shelf-life on brewers yeast. It should be fine if stored in the refrigerator. Though, if like most foods, the older it gets the more it's nutritional qualities disappear. Next time you're at the health food store, ask one of the workers or peruse the jars for storage information.
Wheat germ should be stored in the refrigerator. Usually there will be an expiration date right on the jar. If not, you can usually smell it when it turns rancid. If it smells acrid, it is past its prime . . . toss it out.
You should be fine putting bee pollen into your smoothies. I know some of the smoothie food chains have it as an optional supplement in their drinks. As long as it's edible, you can toss it in!
Hope this helps,
