Back to School Feast
Our family has a tradition of doing a fancy back to school feast before the start of each school year. It is one of my kids’ favorite traditions and something they love to look forward to and plan with me for weeks ahead. Each year we do a different theme, like Harry Potter, Fancy Nancy, Under the Sea, etc. This year we are doing a “Back to School” theme and leaning into the back to school decor and school lunch foods! As part of this meal, we also launch our family theme for the coming year and take the chance to praise our kids for all their strengths before they start this new beginning. Here are the details for our “Back to School” feast in case you want to host one too!
Decor
This is always the first on my list to make our family feast special. We eat dinner together every day, but the feast is special because we transform the space with decorations and special touches that set this meal apart. I enlisted my kids to help make this table runner ruler with paper we found with the paint supplies in the garage. We made personalized crowns using border trim for bulletin boards, and punch out lettering from Dollar Tree. Name tags are pencils, and we turned red paper plates into apples! I sourced back to school type items from around the house to decorate the table- like a globe, a tape dispenser, scissors, crayons, a stapler and more!
Food
My kids were begging for shrimp, so we made it happen! Make sure the meal is something your family loves, this isn’t a time to try a new recipe or get in a tiff with the kids about eating their food. Pick something your family knows and loves! To go with our back to school theme we had little applesauce containers, juice boxes and jello cups! You can serve whatever main course you like, but we are doing chicken pillows with rice and asparagus!
Activities
I posted little stars on the window highlighting things we love about each child. Our goal is for them to feel the love and bump up their confidence coming into this transition. After the feast we move each child’s stars to their room to look at for a few more weeks!
And lastly, I take photos with my kids in their back to school crowns as part of the feast festivities! It’s fun to compare them year to year and see how their crowns change based on our theme and as they grow!.
Overall, our back to school feast is such a highlight, a big memory for our family. Hopefully you can find some ideas here that inspire you too!
