National French Bread Day
By Sydney Hill
You may be asking, what is up with all these French bread articles? Well, it was National French Bread Day on March 21st (what a beautiful day, right?) It's exciting to learn a fun fact or two once in a while, so I found some things about this French Bread day. Not that it really matters in the big scheme of things, but hey, it's always good to learn fun facts.
To start, French bread became a part of French culture in 1920 when a law was passed that workers couldn't begin work before 4 am, including bakers. They needed to get bread ready for their early morning customers, so baked more baguettes, since they were faster. Baguettes are now a part of everyday life in France. (Hence, they don't celebrate this day once a year, but every day of the year. Luckies.)
Although it is known as French bread, this amazing wonder of chewiness was created in Vienna during the Industrial revolution (1800s), along with steam ovens. Since steam is a huge part of the French Bread process, the steam ovens were important in the process.
One of the biggest questions: Who in the world (or nation in this case) decided to have this wonderful day? I'm not complaining, I would just want to send a thank you note or something! I have looked and looked and can't find the mastermind. Was it some big kahuna? Or did someone somewhere just say, "Hey! I love French Bread! I'm going to post this as a national holiday." Maybe word got around and everyone agreed. I have no clue. If there are any history buffs out there who want to shed light, we would much appreciate it. We as in everyone who has decided french bread is awesome.
