The SuperHero Liquid Every Household Needs

By Sydney Hill

Vinegar. Plain old vinegar. It is so versatile and wonderful, that if I listed everything it can do, you would literally be here all day and night. Even then, I'm sure we don't know all it can do. Researching, there were even whole websites dedicated to vinegar! How about that? It's just truly that amazing. (And I bet you already have got a stash of it somewhere around there.)

I write about this now because it's spring! And along with spring usually comes that wonderful spring cleaning. Well, I'm here to tell you, that rather than buying truckloads of cleaners at the store (although I still do love a good magic eraser and vinegar isn't going to disinfect as well as some other cleaners), you can get buy with just a few of them if you have this superhero substance known as vinegar. It is so versatile!

So, rather than listing off the billions of things it does and developing carpel tunnel, I'm going to give you a few of my favorites and let you do some exploring. I'll also give you some website links that were especially helpful.

•  Clean eye-glasses with one drop of vinegar per lens. Wipe clean to remove the build-up.

•  Store cheese by wrapping it in a vinegar soaked cloth, it will apparently store longer.

•  hower-cleaning: Tie a bag filled with vinegar around your shower-head. Take it off in the morning to reveal a much-better looking shower-head.

•  Before boiling eggs, pour 2 tbsp of vinegar to every quart of water. It helps the eggs not to crack during the boiling process, but will help the shell peel off easier.

•  Clean windows by combining 1/2 cup non-sudsy ammonia, 1 cup white distilled vinegar, and 2 tablespoons cornstarch in a gallon of water.

•  Set out a bowl of white distilled vinegar to discourage fruit flies.

•  De-stick things such as scissors (that just cut tape) by rubbing distilled vinegar on it with a cloth (carefully)

•  Give acid-loving plants a mixture of 1 cup vinegar to 1 gallon of water.

•  Get rid of chewed gum sticking to unwanted places by soaking it in vinegar.

•  Add a tsp. of vinegar (or lemon juice) to every 1 cup of flour in a recipe (as part of the liquid) to make a more tender pastry. (won't affect flavor but keeps gluten strands at bay)
