Disney Adventures: Peter Pan
Off to Neverland! Welcome back, adventurers. This week we followed the second star to the right, and straight on 'til morning into another food adventure. The real surprise of this week was not how much food was in Peter Pan, but the lack thereof. Throughout the entire movie only one scene featured any food at all, and it was cut half way off the screen. We saw one bowl of fruit in Captain Hook's cabin. That was it. There was also rum shown, Mr. Smee seemed to be enjoying it.
What do we do with fruit and rum? How dull, there's nothing to make. So this week we put a little spin on the movie "food." Do you remember the song, "Hook is a codfish, Hook is a codfish..."? Well, codfish is edible, and the crocodile ate Hook's hand, so by a bit of a stretch, codfish became our meal this week. With the help of Chef Watson, we came up with a delicious recipe for codfish in a pineapple rum sauce. Very Caribbean-y, and very yummy.
For those who don't know about Chef Watson, it's a computer program that uses IBM's super computer Watson to pair up common ingredients and generate a recipe based off of other recipes. We knew we wanted to use codfish and rum. We also wanted it to have a Caribbean flair, and a new recipe was born. The chef is still in Beta testing mode, but Rhett (my husband) is very technology savvy and has been a beta tester for various games, apps, programs, operating systems, etc. It was a fun new thing to try. Watson even gave us a yummy anchovy-potato twice baked side dish to go along with the cod. Overall, we gave both the codfish and the potatoes an 8/10.
While Peter Pan was a very small cook for us, it made for a very nice dinner. It was especially nice to use the help of Chef Watson to make a unique recipe for dinner. We actually had a hard time finding codfish recipes that used a rum sauce or marinade or anything. While there are a few out there, they didn't quite fit with what we were trying to do.
Next week will be much fuller, as we're doing Lady and the Tramp. Everyone seems to remember the spaghetti and meatballs with that classic noodle-kiss scene. You might even get a picture or two of our dog Roxie! She really enjoyed the movie, and the food… Actually, the movie stressed her out because of the dog pound scene when all the dogs howled a sad song. She brought her toys into the room for comfort and tried to find the dogs in the TV. The food however, was scarfed down quicker than we could believe. Not that we gave our little lady very much of it, but I don't know of any dog who wouldn't be impatiently inhaling a plate of spaghetti. I know no ladies or tramps who would push a meatball to another dog to share. Stay tuned, and go see disneymeals.wordpress.com for the full dishes.
