The One that Got Away: Trader Joe’s Edition
When you decide to go to Trader Joe’s, It can’t be just a spur of the moment decision. You’ve got to go with the right mindset. You’ve got to go in when you’re feeling mentally strong, because it can sure be a tough, emotional experience. It’s very likely that at some point upon entering those doors, your heart is going to be broken.
You see, the thing about Trader Joe’s, but also Costco, come to think of it, is that they get these really cool specialty treats or other goodies, and everyone that tries them falls deeply and madly in love, only to find that the next time you go to the store to repurchase and re-stock up your supply that they are your least favorite word: discontinued! Noooooooo! Why?? How could you??!
At a store like Trader Joe’s it happens all. The. Time. It is so tough! And with Costco as well, particularly if you’ve got a special dietary need like gluten-free, paleo, keto etc. Costco is thinking--”Keto is trending. Let’s try this out……Okay, that didn’t do as well as we hoped it would. Pull it!!!”
I get it, I get it. But it really hurts, nonetheless. So the way I see it, you’ve got two options.
Option #1. Avoid at all Costs. I’m not saying that it’s right, or that you should, but you could treat your secret favorite items from Costco and Trader Joe’s like you do the people that have started going to your church for a couple months during the summer, but that you know are going to be leaving so you don’t want to get too attached, so you keep a somewhat distant, albeit friendly, distance so your heart doesn’t get broken when they move. Okay, that is actually sad when that happens in real life. We have been on both sides of that coin and either way it's hard, but you can see how this seems eerily similar to the topic at large today.
Option #2. “It’s better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all”??
You could also just fall hard in love and just love it as hard as you can for however long you’ve got. Hopefully it’s an item they sell forever, but you just never know! Just love it and appreciate every single bite!
My worst Costco offender of all time has got to be the “raspberry crumble cookies”. They were the best dang baked good ever but I haven’t seen them there in a couple years now. Trust me, I shamelessly and sadly check EVERY time I go, to no avail. It is so tragic. I thought Costco might do me a solid and bring them back for Mother’s Day but sadly, they did not. What does a girl have to do to get them to bring those raspberry crumble cookies back? It’s time to face reality and try and find a good copycat recipe!
And as long as Trader Joe’s keeps their chocolate sheet cake and delicious yogurts, my family will be set. If they discontinue either of these staples, I simply don’t know what I would tell my kids! It would be a real tragedy here at our house.
What are some of your favorite items from stores like Costco or Trader Joe’s that have either been discontinued, or that you would be so sad if they did? Please share your thoughts in the comments below and we will share in your grief with you :)
