Cream together butter (or margarine) and sugar. Add eggs and beat well. Add sour cream and vanilla. Sift together dry ingredients and add to creamed mixture until a soft dough forms. Roll dough on floured surface to a scant 1/2-inch thickness. Cut with large round cookie cutter, 2 to 2 3/4 inches in diameter. Place on greased cookie sheet about 2 inches apart and sprinkle with nutmeg (or with cinnamon and sugar). Bake at 350 degrees F. for 14 to 17 minutes or until very lightly browned. Cookies should be large, soft, and thick. Makes 2 1/2 dozen.
Note: Shortening or lard may be used in place of butter. Plain yogurt may be used in place of sour cream. Almond extract may be used in place of vanilla. Raisins, nuts, or chocolate chips may be added to dough. Cookies may be frosted or decorated as desired.
