1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Butter two 8-x-4-inch bread pans and set aside. Place the dates and raisins in a small bowl, add the boiling water, and set aside to cool.
2. Place the eggs, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and vanilla in a large mixing bowl and stir with a wooden spoon. Stir in the flour, bran, and nuts. Add the cooled dates, raisins, and their liquid, and stir (do not beat) just until the ingredients are mixed—do not overstir.
3. Divide the batter into the prepared pans and bake for 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of a loaf comes out clean. Cool on a wire rack for 30 minutes, then turn the loaves out of the pans. Finish cooling the bread on the rack before serving.
