Bring the water to a boil in a large kettle. Stir in the bouillon cubes, split peas, onion, carrots, salt and pepper. Bring the soup back to a boil, then reduce the heat, cover and simmer for 2 hours.
For a thicker soup, simmer for 30 to 60 minutes more.
