They may not be at the top of the list of healthful foods, but sweets can satisfy us in times of need like nothing else. A plate of oatmeal cookies, a silky pudding, or a fruit dessert may be just what your friend requires to lift his or her spirits. Chocolate, of course, is a classic favorite, which is all the more reason to make chocolate pots de crème, chocolate bread pudding, brownies, or chocolate chip cookies in a get-better present.
Most of the sweets in this chapter can be transported on covered dishes. Carry bars and tarts on a pretty plate, and bring cookies in a decorated tin or in a cookie jar. Wrap sturdier baked desserts in a beautiful napkin or cloth, with a flower slipped into the knot. You can put the angel food cake (and other iced cakes) on a circle of cardboard slightly larger then the cake and transport it (carefully) in a cardboard box.
