Using cookie cutters is delightful when you have the time, but there are other ways to shape rolled dough into good-looking cookies. Some ideas:
*Cut across the entire surface of the dough in two directions to create rectangles, squares or diamonds.
*Make another cut across diamonds or squares to form triangles.
*Cut circles with a drinking glass dipped in flour.
*Use everyday kitchen objects to stamp a design on the top. For instance, gently press dough with the bottom of a cut-glass sugar bowl or a meat mallet.
*Crimp the edges with a fork dipped in sugar.
