1. Wash clams thoroughly under cold running water. Place in large bowl cover with cold water and salt. Let stand 15 minutes. Drain.
2. In large saucepan, bring 1/2 inch water to a boil. Add clams. Cover tightly steam over medium heat for 5 to 10 minutes or until shells open.
3. Remove any sand from cooking broth by straining through several layers of cheesecloth. Serve clams with cups of cooking broth and melted butter.
