Let's eat at Soft Spots!
As the creator of Cook'n, I LOVE to try new foods. I'm the guy who literally ate my way through Epcot Center; purchasing some food item at each place and sharing it with my kids.
Kathy, on the other hand, is not so adventurous. We will be in a foreign country and Kathy will want to get dinner at Pizza Hut. I'm like "really???"
But, I'll eat anything and trying new foods is one of my favorite things in life! For example, here is a quick clip of the boys and me trying something that I got from a stand in Japan back in 2017:
Most of the food we try is amazing but some requires an "acquired taste."
So, you can imagine how excited I was to go to the Soft Spots restaurant!
Soft Spots was recommended to us by our long-time friends, Steve and Susan Christensen. (FYI...Steve and Susan are the parents of Matt Christensen, a fellow Cook'n Newsletter writer).
During a Christmas dinner event at the church a couple months ago, Kathy and I were sitting with the Christensens and Steve & Susan were telling us about their family restaurant tour.
Apparently, now that their kids are mostly grown, one of the things they like to do as a family is tour great restaurants in Utah. They take turns rotating between the people in their family and, each month, a different person gets to pick the restaurant. They told us how they keep a list of each restaurant that they go to. And, they rank each one as well and keep a log. They told us how fun that has been for them and how much they have enjoyed it.
So, I asked them "what is your favorite so far?"
They mentioned that their favorite restaurant so far, by unanimous consent, is Soft Spots in Draper. As you can imagine, I was super intrigued. So, I reached for my phone to make a note of this restaurant so I would remember to go to it sometime. After all, if it's the Christensen's favorite...I gotta try it!
I said "what's that? What's the name of the restaurant?" Susan said "Soft Spots...it's delicious...!"
A few weeks later, Kathy and I were talking with our good friends, Mike & Winger (aka Mike & Kristy Smith. FYI...Mike was my roommate at BYU and Kristy was Kathy's roommate..and yep...roommates married rommates!). We were talking about going out to dinner and I said "I know just the place! We gotta go to Soft Spots...it comes highly recommended!" Smitty (aka Mike) said "what's that?" I said "I'll send you a pin."
However, I couldn't seem to find the address to the restaurant. I searched and searched but...nothin! So, I sent the following text message to Steve & Susan:
Needless to say...I was WAY off! Apparently, the restaurant is called "Sauce Boss."
So, we went there with Mike & Winger and we LOVED it!
Sauce Boss is a simple southern kitchen...but the food is fantastic!
While we were there, we got to meet the owner, Julius Thompson! Chatting with him was super fun.
It was so good and so fun that we went back a week later with our kids! This time, Julius took our order. When I ordered two dishes, my kids laughed and Julius said "das nothin...last week he ordered three!" Hey! Sometimes it's hard to pick just one! And, the boys and I always eat the leftovers.
Apparently, Sauce Boss was featured on Food Network. We were fascinated to hear Julius' behind-the-scenes account of that experience. We learned some very interesting things about Guy Fieri.
Julius said that they shot over 14 hours of footage to make the following 3-minute segment:
"It's almost like he takes stuffing and wraps it around the chicken." Boy! That's a perfect description!
Even though we know the correct name is "Sauce Boss," it has a new nickname now. When we're hungry for something yummy, the kids say let's go to "Soft Spots!"
What about you? Do you like to try different foods and explore new flavors? Or, are you a homie like Kathy who likes the same old same old?
