Herbs-not Just For Flavoring Any More!
by Patty Liston
We are all familiar with the benefits of herbs when it comes to flavoring our favorite dishes. Dill, parsley, rosemary, thyme-each has their own unique way of dressing up and adding the "Wow" to recipes. Did you know however, that they can also act as natural bug repellent? Try these ideas borrowed from our grandmother's history.
- Keep ants away by hanging a small bundle of fresh sage wherever you store food. You can also try putting crushed peppermint leaves on shelves where ants tend to travel.
- Cockroaches, those lovely critters so prevalent in humid states, won't stay around if you put oil of peppermint on surfaces, or around base boards.
- Herb sachets might help to keep moths away from clothing. Just fill the center of a 4 inch square piece of muslin with dried rosemary and tie unto a bundle with some ribbon or twine. Put these bundles in the bottom of clothing drawers and around hangers.
