Product Report: ChillOver Powder—
I Won't Live Without It!
By Alice Osborne
I subscribe to a wonderful magazine, Mary Jane's Farm. It's been around for 11 years now, and it's full of inspiration, common sense solutions to everyday household dilemmas, and great products I've found I simply won't live without.
One such product is Mary Jane's ChillOver Powder. It's an easy-to-use alternative to that common animal-based KNOX Gelatin.
Looks like gelatin. Tastes like gelatin. It isn't. It's better! Mary Jane's innovative ChillOver Powder is for all the people who grew up loving gelatin desserts but gave up on them, knowing their animal origin. It sets up in half the time gelatin does. It seals in flavors more quickly. And it won't melt at room temperature. This is a Project F.A.R.M. (First-class American Rural Made) product.
Off the subject: What's Project F.A.R.M.®? It's a project that was conceived at Mary Jane's farm in Moscow, ID. As rural communities fade and farmers continue to disappear from our landscape, we decided something must be done to support those struggling to maintain their rural lifestyle. That's where PROJECT F.A.R.M. comes in.
Rural America is full of unsung crafters—hard-working men and women, young and old, who deserve their fair share and find it hard, if not impossible, to compete in today's marketplace. To that end, many of the products we sell on our website, or in stores "come with a face": you can "meet" or "get to know" the person behind the product. As the concept grows and you see our PROJECT F.A.R.M. label on more and more products nationwide, you'll know you're supporting rural people like Miss Wilma and Friends, of Kentucky (who boasts she has burned up seven sewing machines making pillows for us), or the women of rural Idaho who sew our "Farmgirl at Heart" tote bags, or the people of Shiner, Texas who fabricate the products in our wireline.
OK, back on subject. An awesome alternative to KNOX Gelatin! Here's what the creator herself, Mary Jane Butters, has to say about this product:
"I wanted to offer the people who buy 300 million boxes of animal gelatin every year a healthy alternative, and bring back all the folks like me who have given up on gelatin.
"I just knew if I was diligent, I could track down and offer a sea vegetable with just the right amount of gel power and no aftertaste. After many, many attempts (I'll spare you the details), I finally discovered a variety that works, as well as an amount. (The amount used and what it's used with are key components in creating meals and desserts without any aftertaste.)"
The texture is far superior to any type of gelatin I've used. 4 packets yielding 16 servings is $4.95. Spendy it seems, but the results are always amazing with this elegantly healthy alternative to animal-based KNOX Gelatin.
But I'll let you judge. Test it out (you can order it at www.maryjanesfarm.org/ChillOver.org)on this delicious recipe that really lives up to its name. See if you don't agree with me-this is one product you won't want to live without!
