Seven Foods That Will Bring You Luck In the New Year

By Whitney Saupan

Do you believe in luck? Do you need some more of it? Maybe your year was less than spectacular and you want to change it up, or maybe you need just a tiny bit of luck in one specific area or maybe you're hosting a New Year's Eve party and need ideas on what to cook.

Whether you believe in "luck" or not, try eating or incorporating these seven lucky foods into your meal on New Year's Eve. They might just bring you luck—even if they don't, there's no harm in eating them anyway!

1. Could you use more money? There are a lot of foods that symbolize wealth and fortune. Two of these foods include any sort of greens and black-eyed peas. Eating greens is said to bring you luck in the department of money. The amount of greens you eat symbolizes the amount of green you'll have in your pocket. In some cultures it's also believed that black-eyed peas and other lentils symbolize coins (because of their shape) and that eating them on New Year's Eve can influence how many coins you'll have in the New Year.

2. Are you trying to start a family? If you or someone you know is baby hungry you should try eating fish and pomegranate seeds. In some cultures the fish is a symbol of fertility. Eating it is supposed to increase your fertility. Pomegranates are associated with abundance and the seeds symbolize fertility. Snack on pomegranate seeds to have "luck" bring you a baby in the New Year. If you want to know how lucky you'll be in the New Year you can use a pomegranate. Just smash it open on the floor. The more seeds the pomegranate has, the more luck you'll have.

3. Would you like a long life? Try slurping up some noodles. In Asian cultures it is thought that if you eat long noodles you'll have a long life. Easy enough right? There is a catch though; you can't cut your noodles up. It's best if you just slurp them up whole!

4. Want to know how your year will go month by month? No problem, in Spain there is a tradition of eating 12 grapes as the clock reaches midnight on New Years. The 12 grapes represent each month and depending on how sweet or bitter your grapes taste, predict how well or how bad your months will go. I personally want to try this luck-predicting tradition!

5. Looking for luck in everything? Eat pork. Pigs symbolize abundance and progress. The fatness of the pig represents the abundance and the pig always rooting its nose forward to find food represents progress. So if you want to be abundant and make progress in the New Year be sure to include pork in your New Year's Eve fare.

6. Need some closure or things to come full circle? Bagels, doughnuts, or anything with a round shape can help in this department. The circular formation of these foods represents closure and everything coming full circle. Plus doughnuts and bagels are always tasty!

7. Want to bring luck to others? Bake a Cake and put a coin in it! In this lucky tradition the person who finds the coin is bound to have a year of good luck! So you'll have good karma for providing someone else with the chance to have some good fortune, and if you find the coin, your luck is sure to increase!
