Marvelous Tip for Messy Prepping

Wouldn’t you say it’s best to work smarter and not harder? Me too. It’s also a universal truth that if something is easy to do, we’re more inclined to do it.

It’s with this wisdom in mind that I share my marvelous tip for messy prepping. When talking “messy prepping,” I’m referring to making instant puddings, sauces, whipped cream, and so on. I’m talking about making stuff that splatters all over heck and gone when using a hand mixer.

Is it not just a pain in the neck wiping up after all that mixing? Cleaning underneath the cupboards and wiping down the counter backsplashes and scrubbing anything sitting nearby on the countertops? This routine makes me not even want to mix anything that’ll splash. Talk about working harder!

Then one day I came up with a smarter way to mix my splashy stuff. I now always mix in a large paper grocery bag.

First, I set the grocery bag down in the clean and dry sink. Having the bowl lower than the countertop makes it less straining on my shoulder and arm (it’s more ergonomically correct). Then I place my mixing bowl inside the bag, put all ingredients in the bowl, and bring my hand mixer to the job.

You can see how mixing splashy things inside a paper bag saves lots of time and energy. All the splatters go on the inside of the bag, not onto the underneath of cupboards, backsplashes, or anything else. In other words, there is absolutely NOTHING to clean when I’m finished mixing.

I save this bag and reuse it over and over. Since this process is so easy to do, I’m now much more inclined to mix things that splash and splatter. Whipped cream for apple crisp? Comin’ up (because there’s now and easier way to do it!).

And speaking of apple crisp, now that you know a marvelous and easy way to mix messy things, how about making one for dinner tonight? With this quick recipe, and a no-muss no-fuss whipping technique, you can get it done pronto! Yay!

Here’s my apple crisp creation. We like it so much we think it’s good enough to serve to any visiting king or queen!

Apple Crisp for Royalty

Ingredients:
CRUMBLE TOPPING
2/3 cup old fashioned oats
2/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup roughly chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans are especially nice)
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
2/3 cup salted butter cut into small pieces

FILLING
1 (20-ounce) can apple pie filling
4 ounces softened cream cheese
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

2. CRUMBLE TOPPING: In a medium-size bowl combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and baking powder. Add butter and cut in with a pastry blender or fork until well combined. Chill for 20 minutes.

3. FILLING: In a small bowl stir together pie filling, softened cream cheese, vanilla, and nutmeg; mix until combined. Pour mixture into 8x8-inch baking dish; spread into an even layer.

4. Bake: Place crumble topping evenly over the apples. Bake for about 35 minutes or until golden brown and top is set. Remove from oven cool at least 15 minutes before serving.

5. Serve with generous dollops of sweetened whipped cream (vanilla ice cream is always an option).
