						   Have Ready: 
   6 eggs slightly beaten 
   1 cup milk 
   1/2 teaspoon salt 
   1 tablespoon sugar 
   Oil for frying 
   8 slices bread thick-cut, 2 to 3 days old 
   Maple-flavored syrup, powdered sugar or tart jelly 
   You'll Need: 
   Measuring cups 
   Measuring spoons 
   Mixing bowl 
   Wire whisk 
   Skillet 
   Spatula 
   Ovenproof plate 
   Serving platter 
						 
						 In a shallow bowl, beat together the eggs, milk, salt and sugar with a wire whisk. Place the oil, about one tablespoon, in the skillet and heat over medium heat. (You may have to add more oil as you go along.) Dip the bread into the milk and egg mixture one slice at a time. Place each dipped slice into the hot oil in the frying pan. Do not overlap or crowd the pieces. Fry for 2 or 3 minutes (until golden brown) and then turn the slices over with the spatula and continue frying until the second side is golden brown. Put the browned slices on an ovenproof plate and place in a 200° oven to keep hot. Continue dipping and frying the remaining slices of bread. Serve hot with maple-flavored syrup, powdered sugar or tart jelly.
