Instructions:
In a small saucepan, sprinkle gelatin over water let stand for 1 minute. Over medium heat, stir until gelatin is dissolved (do not boil). Remove from heat. Stir in shortening until melted. Transfer to a large mixer bowl cool slightly.
At low speed gradually beat in powdered sugar, scraping bowl frequently. Use a wooden spoon for final mixing if dough is too stiff. Place dough on a surface lightly dusted with cornstarch. Knead until satiny smooth. If stiff, add a drop of water. If moist, add a small amount of cornstarch. Divide dough if desired. Knead in food color until desired color.
Keep all dough except what you are using tightly wrapped in plastic wrap to prevent drying. Use to make Sugar Dough Bowls. If making dough ahead, store at room temperature. Use within 1 to 2 days.
