This can be a nerve-wracking experience if left until the last minute! Molded salads containing the right amount of gelatin can be unmolded an hour or more before serving time and safely stored in the refrigerator. Some recommend rinsing molds with cold water before filling or coating with a few drops of vegetable oil. Use whatever tricks work for you. To unmold, run a sharp knife around the top edge of the gelatin. Dip the mold in comfortable warm water for 5 to 10 seconds. Remove to a towel and dry the outside of the mold. Cover mold with a larger serving plate and invert. Shake or tap to release the salad. If this does not work, repeat the process. If all other efforts fail, insert a thin knife between the salad and the mold to let in some air. This usually works.
