The Mac House!
We’ve been in North Carolina for a couple weeks and we finally ventured out to a new restaurant! It only seemed right to start with something very Southern, and while I have a few places on my list, a fun one that I thought my kids would enjoy is The Mac House!
This restaurant specializes in- you probably guessed it- macaroni n’ cheese! They also have several grilled cheese sandwiches and salad options if pasta isn’t necessarily your thing. But if cheese is your thing, you would LOVE this place.
There were SO many options for Mac n’ Cheese. It was impossible to try everything, but we definitely wanted to sample a few options so we ordered smaller sizes of all the meals and shared amongst our family. The service was so great- they proactively brought us extra plates, asked repeatedly if there was anything we needed, and were so helpful in getting a large enough table for our family (it’s a smaller restaurant so we had to push a few tables together ;) ).
Ultimately, we decided to sample the following:
As appetizers we tried the BBQ Fries and Cheese Stuffed Pigs in A Blanket. I didn’t think to get pictures of these- they were devoured too fast anyway!
My kids pounded the fries. They were covered in cheese and a sweet BBQ sauce and pulled pork. Everyone loved it! Cheese Stuffed Pigs in A Blanket are basically two hot dogs stuffed with cheese, each wrapped in a crescent roll and sprinkled with Everything Bagel seasoning. My 2 year old devoured half of one all by herself! The bite I had was absolutely delicious! I would definitely order these again.
I did get pictures of the following delicious things we tried:
The Mac n’ Cheese Burger
My husband LOVED this. So did my 6 year old. It’s basically a huge burger with fried Mac n’ Cheese for the bun! I thought it was ok- I prefer my burgers with a bun ;). But it was certainly a hit with my boys!
The Philly Grilled Cheese
This was quite good! My 6 year old said it was his favorite thing. I wish there had been a bit more flavor with the cheese, but with the steak, peppers and onions, it was tasty!
The regular Mac n’ Cheese
My 4 year old’s favorite- and he is a mac n’ cheese connoisseur ;). I thought it was good, but I definitely preferred the specialty flavors over the basic.
The BBQ Mac n’ Cheese
Now to the specialty flavors! This was similar to the fries- pulled pork, cheese, and a drizzle of a sweet BBQ sauce. Definitely a good combination!
The Seafood Mac n Cheese
This was my 10 year old’s favorite, and probably my second! Shrimp, crab and green onions with a white sauce makes this a more “grown-up” mac n’ cheese- and it was absolutely delicious!
The All-American Mac n Cheese
This was a weird and surprisingly amazing combination! Hot dogs, potato chips, and a drizzle of ketchup on mac n’ cheese. This might have been my favorite thing- and it was definitely the favorite of my 8 and 11 year old! Lots of flavor and texture going on with this one! Maybe it’s all my pregnancy hormones craving salt that made this silly dish taste so spectacular ;).
This was such a fun experience, and we’ll definitely have to go back to try some of the other flavors! And I just may have to recreate some of these at home!
