Warming Up the Season
As winter's icy fingers start to turn the pages on autumn's warmth, food banks, charitable organizations and homeless shelters find their supplies of canned goods and warm winter clothing diminishing. In this season of thanksgiving, your family can richly benefit from activities of giving. Reflecting on all you enjoy in food, warmth, shelter, and family companionship helps tenderize the heart and make it easier to give.
On a planned night, gather your loved ones around and let everyone talk about how you've been blessed. Then hand out boxes and bags and instruct all to go through their closets to find unused or outgrown clothing, coats, boots, scarves, hats, mittens, and socks. When the gleaning is complete, take a box to the food pantry and share canned soup, chili, boxes of pasta, or other non-perishable goods.
Look in your local phone directory for the nearest food bank or charitable organization and arrange for a drop-off or pick-up of your family's generosity. Encourage family members to discuss the warmth they'll feel burning inside-- the glow that comes from knowing you've helped make the world a better place for someone, somewhere.
