Organic vs Conventional
How Does it All Stack Up?

By Patty Liston

I have discussed before the benefits of eating some foods in their organic form. In one article, I wrote about the top 10 foods that one should purchase in their organic form. The reason for this was attributed to a variety of causes: unhealthy pesticides, growth hormones given to cattle and chickens, and antibiotics that seeped into the foods (such as eggs and meat) of animals. Just in case you misplaced this amazing article (hahaha), here is a brief recap:

Foods to buy organic:

Meat
Diary/eggs
Coffee
Peaches
Potatoes
Peppers (celery, green beans, tomatoes)
Leafy greens (spinach had the highest number of pesticides of ANY vegetable tested by the Environmental Working Group).
Baby food
Any food you obsess over: a few corn chips now and then may be just fine. A bag every night may be another issue.

There are also some foods that do not need to be purchased organically because they do not absorb as much pesticide and are peeled prior to eating:

Asparagus
Avocados
Bananas
Broccoli
Cabbage
Kiwi
Mango
Onions
Papaya
Pineapple

All of this information was triggered when I came across this chart based on research done in 1995. This may seem like a long time ago, but if anything, it is more relevant now than it was then!
