I suggest that you check to make sure you gave Cook'n access to the Documents folder on your Mac. To check for that, follow these steps:

• Go to Privacy & Security in System Settings
• Click to Files and Folders and click Cook'n
• Make sure the "Documents Folder" is switched on

If it continues to not work, then it is not the files, but the application itself. You will need to click Finder>Applications>Click and drag Cook'n to the trash>Then you can reinstall.
This will give you a completely new application and you will be able to then open the app correctly.
