Preheat oven to 350° F. Place bread in a 1 1/2 -quart casserole. Toss with butter or margarine.
In a small saucepan combine tomato purée, brown sugar, boiling water and salt. Over medium heat bring to a boil reduce heat to low and simmer for 5 minutes. Pour over bread and toss. Cover and bake for 45 minutes.
