In a heavy 6-quart saucepan, mix cider, apples, brown sugar, cloves, allspice, cinnamon and nutmeg. Over medium-high heat, bring to a boil reduce heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes.
Turn apples. Add lemon and orange slices. Simmer 15 minutes longer.
Just before serving, add optional brandy. To serve, transfer apples and some orange or lemon slices to a heated large crock pour wassail over fruit. Serve in punch cups or mugs with cinnamon stick stirrers.
