Cream sugar and shortening. Add eggs, one at a time, and beat well after each addition. Fold in the chopped apples and the nuts. Sift together the baking soda, spices, and flour and add to the apple mixture. Spread the apple mixture into a greased 9x13-inch pan and pour the fol- lowing sauce over the top.
Sauce:
Stir together the sugar and the flour, then add remainder of ingredients in a heavy saucepan. Bring to a boil and boil gently for 3 minutes, stirring often. Pour this hot sauce over the batter. Do not stir. Bake at 325° for 1 hour.
