In large saucepan add butter; over medium heat saute onions about 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Stir in bread crumbs, sugar, salt, pepper, thyme and basil. Mix together and remove from heat.
In a greased 8 x 8 inch pan place 1/3 layer of bread crumb mixture, 1/2 of artichoke hearts, 1/2 of the tomatoes, repeat layers; ending with 1/3 of the bread crumb mixture on top. Spread shredded Jack cheese on top.
Bake at 375 degrees for about 45 minutes.
