1. Heat oven to 350°. Have a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan ready.
2. To make crust, cut butter into flour with a pastry blender or two knives until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in egg until well blended. Press evenly in bottom of pan with floured hands. Bake 15 minutes until set, but not brown. (Leave oven on.)
3. To make filling, mix flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix brown sugar, dates, and orange juice in a medium saucepan. Cook over low heat 15 minutes. Cool. Stir in flour mixture. Add coconut, walnuts, eggs, and vanilla. Stir until well blended. Spread over crust. Bake 25 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.
4. To make frosting, beat shortening, butter, and extract in a medium bowl with electric mixer until creamy. On low speed, gradually beat in powdered sugar alternately with hot cream. Beat until fluffy. Spread over filling. Cut into bars.
