Every mid-November my children choose a name from their school’s Angel Tree. They earn extra money to buy their Angel gifts by doing extra chores around our home and our neighborhood. This year, my two were really old enough to understand that some families have a harder time during the holiday season. As we were preparing to do our holiday shopping, my son said, “Mom, please add half of my Christmas money to my Angel’s gift, I already have way too many toys and things. Since this child only wants a pair of shoes from Santa, I want him to have a Christmas to remember. I have so many good memories of our Christmases, I want to have at least one he can remember too.” Well, this touched my heart deeply, and we did give that child a special Christmas. And I think that we got a special present too...I realized that my children really do learn from the things I try to teach them, and this year, he learned what it’s like to give rather than receive.
