My sister, Linda, is 16 years older than me and I have never outgrown how much I look up to her and respect her. When Linda was in college, I was, of course, hanging out at our house with my parents and anxiously awaiting all of her visits home. Linda was taking classes to become a teacher and I was her unwitting guinea pig for the projects she had been assigned. I always felt special that she’d pull out items for me to color, cut or paste from the worn suitcase that also released her special perfume to waft through the air as the top flipped open. One holiday season I remember especially well; I must have been about four years old. Linda was planning to arrive home a few days before Christmas and since she was a college student, she didn’t have much money for Christmas gifts. Her plan was to return home, purchase all the necessary ingredients and bake like crazy while leaving enough time to get the goodies wrapped for the holiday. I was so excited just for her to be home, but when she asked if I wanted to help her with her baking project, I was in pure heaven. She
had a huge copper container that she planned to fill...then and only then would she consider herself done. We started early that day and were still going strong in the wee hours of the next morning...and she didn’t tell me once that I needed to go to bed. I think I did end up turning in before she did, but I had made that decision myself. Rumor has it that she was pulling out the last cookie sheet as the sun came up. That baking marathon with my big sister remains one of my favorite Christmas memories. My treat, my gift, had been time with someone who remains a special person in my life!
