* Measure dry ingredients into a large bowl mix well. Sift mixture into another large bowl. With a pastry blender cut in shortening until mixture resembles cornmeal. Store in an airtight container in a cool dry place up to 3 months. Heat oven to 375° F. Combine mix, 1/3 cup sugar, oats, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cut in butter or margarine until crumbly set aside. Toss apple slices with lemon juice spread in bottom of a greased 8-inch square pan. Sprinkle with 1/4 cup sugar. Sprinkle topping over apples and bake for 35 to 45 minutes or until apples are tender. Serve warm with optional heavy cream or ice cream.
