Heat oven to 350° F. In a small bowl, cover dates with hot water and set aside. Cream butter or margarine, sugar, eggs, salt, and vanilla together. Blend in flour, baking soda, cocoa, and 1/2 cup chocolate chips. Mix well. Add dates and water mix well. Pour into a greased 9 x 13-inch baking pan. Sprinkle top of cake batter with remaining 1/2 cup chocolate chips and nuts. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until cake tests done.
