Peel and cube potatoes (you will need about 3 cups). Place potatoes in a large saucepan. Add enough hot tap water to cover (do not add salt). Over high heat, bring to a boil reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes or until fork tender. Drain well.
Meanwhile, in a large skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of the butter or margarine. Add cereal and onion powder. Stir until coated and lightly browned set aside.
In same skillet, melt remaining 4 tablespoons butter or margarine. Add potatoes and peas and onions. Saute for 5 to 6 minutes or until potatoes have absorbed butter or margarine and are golden.
In a small bowl, stir milk, sauce mix and pepper until blended. Stir into skillet. Bring to a boil reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Sauce will appear thin, but will thicken.
Pour into a serving dish. Lightly crush seasoned cereal and sprinkle over potato mixture.
* Other flavors of sauce mixes can be substituted such as white sauce, stroganoff or sour cream and chive.
