_A Lasting Gift

As a kid my only concern with Dad's camp kitchen had to do with when dinner would be served. Upon receiving my driver's license as a teenager, I started going on trips with my friends. Without parental guidance and the absence of anyone remotely close to being a camp cook, our chow fell into the 'Very Basic' category! After just a couple of these trips I asked Dad if I could borrow his camp kitchen. Without going into details Dad based his decision in part on my track record of borrowing tools, pocketknives and gas money. Mom came to my rescue. She started culling some of her kitchen stuff and picked up new stuff for the house. With this modest start my camp kitchen came into being.

A few years later an academic miracle occurred! I graduated from college. (My philosophy of, "To hell with excellence, mediocrity will suffice," contributed to my taking six years to get a four year degree.) In recognition of this miracle Mom and Dad gave me a graduation gift I use to this day! After years of camping in an old army surplus squad tent, they'd bought a new cabover camper. Mom outfitted the kitchen with new pots, pans, and utensils. The old squad tent and their cast iron cookware now became 'parental surplus' and my camp kitchen took a quantum leap forward.

The Dutch oven and the skillets given to me twenty-five years ago remain the core of my camp kitchen. Two or three of the pieces they gave me date from just after WWII when they were married! Over time I've accumulated another 25+ Dutch ovens, several more skillets, and four cast iron griddles. Properly cared for, cast iron cook gear will last longer than the cook!
