Heat a grill for hot, direct cooking coat the grill rack with oil.
While the grill is heating, sprinkle the chicken with the spice rub place in a 9- by 13-inch glass baking dish and pour the barbecue sauce over the top. Roll the chicken around to coat thoroughly. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and microwave at full power for 10 minutes.
Remove the chicken from the sauce and grill, bone-side down, 7 minutes for breasts and 5 minutes for everything else. Turn and grill on the other side for 3 minutes for breasts and 5 minutes for everything else. The interior of the thickest pieces of chicken should register 165°F. Serve.
