Dissolve yeast in ¼ c. warm water, stir in 1 tsp. sugar. Let rest 15 for minutes. Mix in egg, oil, ½ c. water, salt, and 1/3 c. sugar. Add starter, mix well. Add 2 c. flour, stir well with a wood spoon. Add 1 1/2c. more flour, mix.
Turn out on a floured board, flour hands and knead 10 to 15 times. Add more flour if sticky.
Oil bottom, sides, and lid of a 12” Dutch oven. Warm, then place dough inside, let dough rise 1 to 1 ½ hours ‘til doubled.
Punch down and knead again. Shape into loaves, let rise “til doubled. Bake at 350°F with 10 bottom coals, 12 top coals, for 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from oven, cool 15 minutes, serve hot.
