Preheat oven to 350°. Grease a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking pan.
In a large saucepan over low heat, melt butter and chocolate. Remove from heat. Gradually stir in sugar until well blended. Beat in eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in flour, dates, nuts, vanilla, and salt until smooth. Spread in pan.
Bake 25 to 30 minutes until center is set (do not overbake). Cool pan on a wire rack. Cut into bars.
