Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg whites and beat well, then add egg yolks. Sift flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt together and then add to egg mixture. Mix in buttermilk, bananas, and vanilla. Add nuts and mix well. Pour into greased and floured cake pan. Bake at 350° for 30–35 minutes.
Fun Fact: Bananas are loaded with potassium. Potassium is important in keeping your blood pressure at a healthy level.
